Subject: Scholarships Offered in 2002 by the AACCA
Once again, the Central Council of the Association of Armenian Church Choirs of America is pleased to announce its scholarship programs. These are made possible from various memorial funds and contributions. The following scholarships are available in 2002:
Two $100 scholarships for the St Nersess Summer Conferences. These will be held at the Seminary, New Rochelle, NY.
One $100 scholarship for the St Vartan Camp. This is a Diocese program.
One $100 scholarship for Hye Camp. This is a Diocese program.
One $500 Margaret E. Hagopian scholarship.
The St Nersess Seminary Summer Conferences will have six programs in the Eastern Diocese in 2002:
- Deacons Training and Liturgical Music Program (June 21-30)
- High School Conference A (July 4-12)
- High School Conference B (July 15-23)
- High School Conference C (July 27- August 4)
- Junior High School (August 7-11)
- Post High School (August 14-20)
The Summer Conferences aim to open up to Armenian American young people the richness and relevance of the Armenian Church. Participants will hear presentations and share in discussions on the tradition and teachings of the Armenian Church and the Christian culture of the Armenian people. The Summer Conferences emphasize overcoming obstacles to living our lives as committed Armenian Christians in America today. The programs include discussions, Armenian language instruction, daily worship, and study of the Bible and Liturgy, with sports, excursions and social activities. This blend of learning, prayer and fun creates the perfect opportunity to make friends for life, and has made the St Nersess Seminary Summer Conferences so successful for more than 35 years.
The Rev. Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian, pastor of St Peter Armenian Church of Watervliet, NY, is the director.
Each summer St Nersess conducts a 10-day program of training for deacons and others who desire to serve at the altar during the Divine Liturgy and other services of the Armenian Church. Daily clases train participants in the practical aspects of the deacon's liturgical ministry, including chanting, censing, deacon's rituals, and liturgical reading of Holy Scripture and the Gospel. Through innovative presentations, the students also deepen their understanding of the structure and meaning of the litrugical services of the Armenian Church. Special emphasis is placed on the vocation and role of the deacon in the life of the church. Daily Bible study, worship, and recreational and social activities round out the program. Contact The Very Rev. Daniel Findikyan at St Nersess Seminary, at (914) 636-2003.
The Margaret E. Hagopian Scholarship Fund has been earmarked for choir singers and altar servers actively participating in their choirs for a minimum of one year, who will be enrolling in courses such as Music History, Music Appreciation, Music Theory, Composition or Vocal Instruction. It is also offered to organists for developmental skills and to choir directors for instruction and improvement in conducting their choirs. Individual parishes may also apply for this scholarship to be used toward programs for the improvement of their own local choirs.
